Addressing Impacts on Wetland Hydrology in Minnesota
Speaker
Abstract
Although Minnesota is a water-rich state, the growing demand for groundwater is causing concern over possible adverse effects on surface waters, including wetlands. The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources, which is responsible for managing and regulating both groundwater and surface waters, has been evaluating groundwater – surface water interactions and exploring science-based approaches for responsible management. This presentation will focus on these efforts relating to wetlands, including providing background on the problem, describing a new statewide project to monitor wetland hydrology and presenting a possible approach for applying this data to groundwater permitting issues.
