Residential Road Salt: A Mass-Balance Study in a Suburban Watershed

Douglas Klimbal

April 26, 2019

Chloride is widely recognized as a problematic component of metropolitan life in regions where it is used as a deicing compound. Despite its now ubiquitous effects on the built environment and natural systems, a great degree of uncertainty exists as to the distribution and loading of chloride into the landscape. This presentation will include a discussion of methods for mass balance analysis through automated monitoring systems, as well as preliminary results for a two-year study conducted in a small residential road drainage.
