Michael Pace Seminar, U of MN Duluth

Title: Do Aquatic Ecosystems Run on Alternative Fuels?

Dr. Michael Pace is a professor in the Department of Environmental Sciences at the University of Virginia and an Adjunct Scientist at the Cary Institute of Ecosystem Studies in Middlebrook, NY. His research focuses on food webs and biogeochemical processes in aquatic ecosystems and seeks to understand and predict properties of aquatic ecosystems from external watershed characteristics and from internal ecological interactions.

John Downing Seminar, U of MN Twin Cities

Title: Global Limnology: Upscaling from 10,000 Lakes to Planet Earth

Dr. John Downing is a Professor in the Department of Ecology, Evolution and Organismal Biology at Iowa State University. His research in aquatic ecology and limnology is centered upon the highly impacted, eutrophic to hypereutrophic lakes and streams of the US Midwest.

Minnesota Aquatic Sciences Retreat Seminar:

  • Life On the Extreme Edge of the Nutrient Spectrum
    John Downing

Location: Audubon Center of the North Woods, Sandstone, MN

The retreat featured focused sessions of presentations and discussions with the distinguished visitors followed by a series of brief talks from students, faculty and partners. Dinner and an evening poster session were held on Saturday evening. Additional talks followed on Sunday until noon.

This retreat is being co-sponsored by the WRS (with funding from the Graduate School), the UMD Center for Freshwater Research and Policy, and the Minnesota Sea Grant Program.
